Kick off the New Year with a unique beginning! Be one of the first guests to cruise Asia aboard the newly enhanced Norwegian Spirit after her multi-million-dollar, bow-to-stern revitalization. Enjoy a late night in Phuket where you'll have plenty of time to kayak through limestone caves on the Lao Liang Islands, sit down for an authentic Thai meal and stroll down the candy-colored streets of Phuket's Old Town. Wat Chalong with its lovely pagoda, and Wat Phra Thong, revered for its huge golden Buddha statue, are absolute must-sees. With two overnights in Yangon you have an opportunity to really immerse in this brand new port of call. See the magnificent splendor of the Shwedagon Pagoda, a golden shrine towering to a height of 326 feet. Nearby visit the Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda with its reclining 230-foot-long Buddha statue, which was completed in 1966. And if you're an animal lover visit the Yangon Zoo which has an impressive collection of wild animals from around the globe.
Highlights of this cruise:
Explore a compact, fascinating city-state that's truly global. A onetime British trading post, its diverse past is reflected everywhere, from its old Chinese quarter and colourful Hindu temples to its modern skyscrapers and common language, English. Take a short cruise along the Singapore River or a pedicab ride through town, or enjoy the quiet at the National Orchid Garden. Interested in Asian medicine? A special medicinal restaurant can prescribe just the menu to help you feel your best.
Experience the many facets of Phuket, from its gorgeous beaches, to its 19th century Chinese and Western architecture and stunning Buddhist temples. Wat Chalong with its lovely pagoda, and Wat Phra Thong, revered for its huge golden Buddha statue, are must-sees. Explore the breathtaking Phang Nga National Park, made famous by the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. If it is shopping you seek, bright silks, teak carvings and trinkets will satisfy many a shopping list.
Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, was the country's capital from 1948 to 2006 when Nay Pyi Taw was designated as the new capital. However, the city, which is the largest in Myanmar, retains great economic and cultural importance, which can be seen as you explore its bustling streets. Stroll among its historic colonial architecture-evidence of former British rule-and visit some of its many awe-inspiring Buddhist temples. While browsing its open-air markets and street vendors, pause to relax at one of the numerous tea shops that are social hubs for residents. The National Museum in Yangon highlights the region's ancient heritage while the Nawaday Alley Gallery offers a glimpse into modern day culture with its showcase of local artists.
Kuala Lumpur (Port Klang), Malaysia
The diverse capital of Malaysia blends colonial, Islamic and modern architecture, from the soaring Petronas Towers to the beautiful Masjid Jamek, once Kuala Lumpur's main mosque. Get a bird's eye view of the city from the open-air observation deck of the Kuala Lumpur Tower, the highest point in the city open to the public. Head to the air-conditioned Central Market to browse its stalls and shops for all kinds of souvenirs, with no bargaining necessary.
